Itinerary
From El Calafate, in just a few minutes, we’ll start our ascent to the Huyliche mountain range. The route begins by traversing the slopes of Cañadon del Arroyo Calafate, where we can observe native wildlife such as guanacos, foxes, hares, ibis, caracaras, and falcons, among other species. We’ll continue along the winding path surrounded by erratic boulders, witnesses to the power of glacier erosion, until we reach the First Balcony, a scene from the Cenozoic Era dating back 65 million years, on the bed of an ancient sea that exposed fossils, sediments, and pieces of fossilized vegetation.
After descending from the vehicles for a few minutes, we’ll continue to the Upper Balconies, situated at 1,100 meters above sea level, offering a panoramic view of the Andes mountain range, the Continental Ice of Patagonia, and all the arms of Lake Argentino, surrounded by curious rock formations. On clear days, we can see from Mount Stokes to the Fitz Roy and Torre peaks in El Chalten, as well as the Patagonian Continental Ice in the Andes. If the valley is cloudy, we may see the Cordillera above the clouds – which are usually located at 700 meters – about 400 meters below our position.
In addition to the unforgettable views of Lake Argentino, Brazo Rico, Garganta del Diablo, and the Andes, the location of the Balconies above the condor nests makes it an ideal spot to appreciate the majestic flight of the Andean Condor, one of the largest birds in continental Patagonia.
The descent in 4×4 will be along the southern slope of the mountain, where we’ll stop to take a walk to the Maze of Stones, a curious rock formation formed by wind erosion over thousands of years, where we’ll find marine fossils, various rocks and stones, unique caves, and fantastic erosion formations, a fantastic place for unforgettable photographs. During thaw or heavy rain, this stop may not occur.
Continuing the descent, we’ll arrive at Estancia Huyliche, a historic cattle ranch active since the 1920s, during the historical events known as the Patagonian Rebellion. Next, at the oldest house of the ranch, we’ll have lunch, snack, or dinner depending on the reserved time.
The tour lasts between 3.5 and 4 hours, depending on the number of participants.
In winter, when part of the 4×4 route becomes inaccessible due to the large amount of accumulated snow (or mud during the thaw), the ascent is made to about 800 meters until reaching the “East Balcony” where you can enjoy magnificent panoramic views of El Calafate, Lake Argentino, and the Andes.
